The One Where Jen Advocates Polygamy

Statistically in America, there are 5 million more women than men. In Britain, there are one million more women. In the world, there are a little over 33 million more men than women. Looking at this statistic, it seems to me that women are almost in competition for the men available in America and Britain. It’s like buying a dozen donuts for a family of thirteen. Someone is always going to walk away hungry. So besides moving to another country (Afghanistan anyone? One million more men), what’s a girl to do?

A new show premiered on HBO last week called Big Love. It's about a family of polygamists living a very ordinary life in Utah- except the fact that there are three moms, three wives and three homes all operating as one. According to US government estimates, 20-40,000 people in America practice polygamy. Officially, the Mormon Church banned the practice in 1890 but it still goes on today amongst their followers.

With the above statistic in mind, I wonder if polygamy does actually have a place in modern society. If some women want to team up with one man, who am I to deny them? It just means that there is one more guy available for me. We are all very concerned these days with making sure not to prejudice against anyone’s sexual practices (hell I even read an article about a woman insisting her sex slave be welcome at her family’s home for Christmas). Polygamy is an ancient practice. No one reads the Bible and thinks, “Abraham, you vile creature!” or thinks poorly about his wives. If more than one woman chooses to be with one man in this day and age, let them do it! After all, it’s nothing more than a sexual preference.

And it gets them out of the bloody way.

The Online Test

When I was in college, I lived at The Spark, a site devoted to college kids goofing off. They had a great section full of stupid quizzes and I was their biggest follower. Today, whilst trolling through MySpace, I came across my friend Rebecca's page. She had a quiz up telling us that the Sex and the City girl she was most akin to was Miranda. Since I was bored, I decided to see if my suspiscions that deep down I am Carrie Bradshaw were correct. And guess what? I was:

You Are Most Like Carrie!

You're quirky, flirty, and every guy's perfect first date.

But can the guy in question live up to your romantic ideal?

It's tough for you to find the right match - you're more than a little picky.

Never fear... You've got a great group of friends and a

great closet of clothes, no matter what!

Romantic prediction: You'll fall for someone this year...
Totally different from any guy you've dated.

Doesn't that sound just like me?

I believe that people who post their online results to these inane tests simply lead too dull a life to actually warrant having a blog. So believe me, this is not one of those stupid posts but rather an exhibition of what I have learned about my dating self today from quizzes thought up by web geeks who have probably never gone on a date themselves.

I am 56% datable
I am 60% a flirt (and here I thought it would be much higher)
and the ideal place I should live (and hopefully find love) is London.

Speaking of the internet and dating, what do we think of the online dating service? A friend of mine (Kim) this past week took the excruciatingly long eHarmony quiz to find her perfect match amongst their online profiles. eHarmony in America has these constant adverts on TV depicting happy couples who found their soulmates through this site. Their personality match-up quiz took my friend TWO HOURS to take (back in 2002 I attempted it but quit after half an hour) and how many eligable bachelors did she get sent to her? NONE. Not a single person in their whole database matched up. She evidently has no ideal.

I've flirted (not surprisingly according to my online quiz) with the idea of the online dating. I went so far as to create myself a profile on the Village Voice site a couple of weeks ago, but then deleted it after 10 minutes. My one problem with it is this: if someone contacts me I will be too nervous to actually go out with them. Also, I hate the idea of having to referee all these emails (look how confident I am) from guys. I know a couple of friends who have met wonderful people through the online dating so I know it can work. I guess for me, "not yet" is all I have to say.

Concert Update

I feel some sort of update is in order. hmmmmm...well the bad news is that I am still unemployed and still single. But the good news is that I AM STILL UNEMPLOYED AND STILL SINGLE! oh, AND STILL FABULOUS! What's up?!

So to fill my time when I am not watching TV and looking for employment, I mostly go to concerts.

On February 25th, I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Bowery Ballroom with Laura, Matt, Billy and two random people (one, a fan of my music site and the other the person the fan sold his extra ticket to- whom happened to have graduated from SyHi a year after me, NYC is sometimes a v. small island).

Karen O (lead singer) is indeed a phenomenon. She reminds me a whole hell of a lot of my friend Harrison, whom you might remember from my Philly trip. Karen spent most of the show bouncing around like an ADHD kid without their ritalin.

I haven't always been the biggest Yeah Yeah Yeahs fan. I was sick of their hype even before I heard their music and then the single 'Maps' hit and I was like, meh. But this show really solidified the fact that yes, they really are cool and yes, I am a fool.

Two days later, I sped into the city once more to see Kunek with Matt and Billy. Kunek was a band I knew hardly anything about but their label put us on the list and who can turn down a free show?

Seems they are a bunch of youngins from Oklahoma who play Radiohead/Travis like music.

Unfortunately none were that cute. Their music was quite lovely but not that exciting.

And I think that brings us up to speed. I have a few more concerts on the horizon (Sondre Lerche, Arctic Monkeys and Editors), a gallery opening next weekend and hopefully an interview sometime soon. Now, it's time for bed. Ciao.
